DECORATIVE FINISHES FOR HISTORIC PERIOD HOMES
Building artisans throughout the 18th, 19th and early 20 century were adept at producing a host of finishes and decorative techniques varying from the deceptive to the sublime. Techniques for making wood look like stone or marble or look like a wood of another species were especially common. Our comprehensive approach to architectural styles and materials allows us to match our new work to the demands of the original finish for numerous efficiencies in cost and outcome. We believe that understanding decorative finishes is essential to reproducing credible period restoration work. Illustrated above is a hearth and fireplace surround with a faux marble finish. This shade is surprising to the modern eye, but it is a typical and authentic color design choice for the period.
We use Shreuder Paints from Holland, the highest quality European made paints available.
Historic Structures is pleased to work with clients conserving, restoring or reproducing period styles from the early eighteenth century to the early twentieth. Our experience and commitment can help to assure an efficient and satisfactory result for your project as it has for so many others. If your project employs period finishes, wood graining, faux bois or marbleizing, you may benefit from our integrated approach to materials and project management.
