Wood Graining (Faux Bois), Marbleizing (Faux Marble) and other Decorative Finishing Techniques.
Federal period designers showed a preference for bringing light and bright color into the living space, as this faux marble fireplace surround shows.

Building artisans throughout the 18th, 19th and early 20 century were adept at producing a host of finishes and decorative techniques varying from the deceptive to the sublime. Techniques for making wood look like stone or marble or look like a wood of another species were especially common. Our comprehensive approach to architectural styles and materials allows us to match our new work to the demands of the original finish for numerous efficiencies in cost and outcome. We believe that understanding decorative finishes is essential to reproducing credible period restoration work. Illustrated above is a hearth and fireplace surround with a faux marble finish. This shade is surprising to the modern eye, but it is a typical and authentic color design choice for the period.

We use Shreuder Paints from Holland, the highest quality European made paints available.
